Liberals Don’t Mind Raising Taxes…

They Just Don’t Pay Them!

How do Liberals feel about taxes?  Well, let’s see what some of them have to say:

Obama says that taxes are necessary to “spread the wealth,” and that’s best for everybody.  And the famous Joe Biden quote during the Presidential campaign, “Paying your taxes is your patriotic duty.”  Then later, he is quoted that “…supporting a tax hike is the American thing to do.”  Democratic linguist George Lakoff proclaims, “Taxes are what you pay to be an American!”

And my current personal favorite?  In 1998, Tom Daschle said, “Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter.”

It seems that many whom our new President is nominating for his Cabinet and other lofty positions are un-American, unpatriotic cheaters who have refused to do their duty and are unwilling to spread their wealth and do the “American” thing!

Of course paying your taxes IS the right thing to do.  No disagreement there.  Why, then, is the accepted excuse from both Daschle and Charlie Rangel, also under investigation for not paying his taxes, that they were “sloppy and ignorant, not criminal”?

If the IRS should “enforce our laws to the letter,” shouldn’t they be forced to pay every penalty that is required by law?

There are currently four liberal democrats who are dealing with tax issues:

Recently confirmed Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who failed to pay $34,000 over several years during the early part of this decade.   Even after being caught, he didn’t pay back taxes due for two years because the statute of limitations had passed. He also attempted to deduct his children’s summer camp as a business expense even after seeking counsel from his accountant who told him it would not be smart to do so.

Then, there is former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, who just withdrew his name from the nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services; he neglected to pay $128,000 in taxes between 2005-2007, by not reporting a car and driver service as income.  He also reported more in charitable contributions than he had actually made.  As a Senator he helped write some of the tax code.

Nancy Killefer, who was to be Obama’s Chief Performance Officer.  She withdrew her name when it was revealed that there was a $946 lien on her house in the District of Columbia for failing to pay unemployment compensation tax for household help.

And last but certainly not least, Charlie Rangel, the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, who is under investigation for errors he made on his tax returns, which he acknowledged last fall. This included $75,000 in unpaid taxes on rental income.   And who can forget his use of a parking space in the House of Representatives parking garage for the 1976 Mercedes-Benz, covered by a tarp, sporting tags that had expired in 2004?

Mr. Rangel had the audacity to write a letter blaming Republicans and the media for his troubles!

President Obama says he is serious about his promise to usher in a “new era of responsibility” in Washington.  He vowed to "close the revolving door" and "clean up both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue" with "the most sweeping ethics reform in history."  Week two of this new way of doing things in D.C. looked an awful like business as usual.  Let’s not forget that change can be for the worse as well as for the better.  Time will tell us which it will be.

I’m old enough to remember how giddy the nation was when Jimmy Carter was elected President in 1976.  He arrived in Washington with the highest approval ratings in history.  And 48 months later he left our nation on the brink of collapse and humiliated abroad after over 400 days of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Will we ever learn the lesson that no man can save us and that our only hope is a return to the God Whom our Founding Fathers acknowledged in our Declaration granted us certain unalienable rights.  Vigilance is the price of maintaining our freedoms.

Thank you in advance for your generous support!
