Press Exposed--Now Opposed to Lights and Bookshelves

The press has made this simple ad famous--scrutinizing it to prove a “vast righteous wing evangelical” conspiracy, seeing a cross in the bookshelves and the three Christmas lights as having “secretive” symbolism for the “initiated” (meaning those radical Christians who believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit).

And this is the crowd that thinks that Ron Paul is wacky for believing the Trilateral Commission and the Council on Foreign Relations are conspiracies.

Heaven help us--and I mean that literally!

To view what all the controversy is about click here to see the Huckabee Christmas greeting.  To see what Meredith Vieira of the Today show on NBC had to say about the ad, click here.

I have two things to say about this controversy.

  1. If the media is absolutely correct and the whole thing was orchestrated by Mike Huckabee to quietly display his faith, so what?  The First Amendment states that all of us have freedom of religion, freedom of speech and the right to redress our grievances against the government.  What law would Huckabee be breaking, IF he did exactly what the left is accusing him of doing?
  2. If, as he says, he simply sat down at the end of another arduous and exhausting day with his staff to discuss how to counter the numerous and relentless attacks on his candidacy that he is now experiencing as the front runner. And decided that rather than go negative, do a positive and warm Christmas greeting to the nation--those who have attacked him owe him an apology.
I believe the second scenario is what happened, but either way the media has inadvertently demonstrated its aversion and hostility to the Christian religion.  Mike Huckabee was a Governor for over 10 years but his prior service as a former Baptist preacher and his surge as a frontrunner for president has made him a real threat to the power brokers in and out of politics.  Now it seems that even a Christmas greeting is suspect.

Place any of the other major candidates in that same setting and ask yourself if it would be a major news story.  For Huckabee, the good news is, his minor ad buy has now received millions of dollars of free air time.  Perhaps the intellectual elite in our country aren’t all that smart after all.

Merry Christmas

Tommye and I will be taking some much needed time off during the Christmas holidays.  Our son, Richard, and his wife, Anny, are expecting twins any day.  This will be their first venture into parenthood and they are starting off with a double blessing.  We are so very pleased and excited.

We seem to be Christmas people.  Tommye’s birthday is Dec. 27, our granddaughter Alexis, Misty’s child, was born on Dec. 28, and Tommye and I were married on Dec. 27.  For all those reasons, I will be hiding for a few days to spend time with those whom I love so very much.

As you are reading this email, I pray all the best for you and yours.  Please remember that Christmas is Jesus’ birthday.  You could not give Him a more meaningful present than to offer Him the keys to your life and pledge your devotion to Him this next year.  I made the wonderful discovery that Jesus truly makes life come alive almost 40 years ago.  I have lived completely sold out to Him since 1969.  Tommye and I will celebrate our 37th anniversary on Dec. 27 and I can testify to you that He has made all the difference in our lives and our marriage.

Please consider our work for an end of the year offering as Dec. 31 approaches.  2008 will be a make or break year for America.  The end of abortion is in sight--but so is the end of any hope we may have if the wrong people are allowed to decide who fills the next Supreme Court vacancy.  That’s why I believe that this election year truly is the most important in my lifetime.

God Bless you.  Happy Birthday, Jesus!

"For a child is born to us,
a son is given to us.
The government will rest on his shoulders.
And he will be called:
Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God,
Everlasting Father,
Prince of Peace."
