Proposed Democratic Platform is Rotten at its Core

Lynchburg, VA – Today Mathew Staver, Chairman of Liberty Alliance Action, commented on the new proposed language in the Democratic Platform: “The proposed Democratic Platform released this week continues to laud the culture of death,” Staver said. “The proposed platform says: ‘The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right. The Democratic Party also strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education which empower people to make informed choices and live healthy lives. We also recognize that such health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions. The Democratic Party also strongly supports a woman's decision to have a child by ensuring access to and availability of programs for pre and post natal health care, parenting skills, income support, and caring adoption programs.’”

Joel Hunter, pastor of Northland, A Church Distributed in Orlando, Florida, was quoted as saying “Pro-lifers of both parties can now support Senator Obama on the basis that more lives will be saved than if they had just taken a moral stand hoping to overturn Roe versus Wade.” Really?

Staver says that the Democratic platform supports killing children. “It even supports government policies to force you and me to pay for their death (‘regardless of ability to pay’)”, Staver said.  “It is no more acceptable to say you want to kill children, just less of them, than it is to say you favor gassing Jews, only fewer of them, or you favor slavery, only we should reduce the number of slaves. It is not the number that makes abortion wrong. Abortion is wrong. Period!”

According to Staver, Americans need to remember that the Declaration of Independence clearly says the role of government is to protect God-given, inalienable rights, among which is the right to life. “Without the right to life, all other rights are illusory,” says Staver. “Freedom of religion, the environment and health care are meaningless to a corpse. I don’t understand the thinking that says you have to limit the priority you place on life in order to embrace a broader agenda,” Staver added.

“We must first start with the premise – Roe v. Wade is wrong and the policy of abortion it sanctioned is immoral and inconsistent with the role of government to protect human life. From that premise, we then move to protect and improve human life along the spectrum. But when you start with the premise that Roe v. Wade is right and the policy of abortion it sanctioned is consistent with the role of government, everything else is flawed,” concluded Staver.
